The Blob Returns Again

Cult horror movie The Blob is to get another remake by director Rob Zombie. The orginal film gave Steve McQueen an early starring role. The last remake was in 1988 by director Chuck Russell. Talking about the project Zombie said, "My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing - that's the first thing I want to change. That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now.

"I'd been looking to break out of the horror genre, and this really is a science fiction movie about a thing from outer space. I intend to make it scary, and the great thing is I have the freedom once again to take it in any crazy direction I want to."

Stargate Creators Speak About Stargate Universe

Brad Wright & Robert C Cooper, co-creators of the Stargate tv series, have been talking about the new edition to the family, Stargate Universe.

Wright said, "After 15 seasons of doing something called Stargate, we wanted to do something new, something very different. Other than the stargate itself, which is still very much at the core of our show, a lot of Stargate Universe is very, very different from the old series. We're very, very proud of this, and excited to still be doing what is basically our 16th season of Stargate."

"One thing we decided, in our pursuit of realism, was to step away from rubber-faced, English-speaking aliens, and you will see none of those in the new show. And fewer trees," he added.

"We will run into aliens. They're just not going to be human, latex-faced, English-speaking aliens."

Cooper added, "When we were conceiving the idea for this, we definitely felt that, in some ways, Atlantis and SG-1 had become a little bit too far into their mythologies. We really wanted, for a number of reasons, to make a show that is broader and more accessible to (a mainstream) audience and not just science- fiction. We felt we had told a lot of Stargate stories - 300 or so episodes - and we wanted to come up with a way to make it fresh. And the best way to do that is to tell stories through new characters' eyes. The great thing about this Stargate is it takes place now. It's contemporary. We have characters who are from our world. Our show doesn't just take place on a spaceship. It takes place on Earth. We're hoping that, by focusing a little bit less of the science- fiction aspects of the story and a little more on the characters, we can reach audiences who wouldn't normally embrace a science-fiction show."

Wright said, "We want our Stargate fan base to join us, and I believe they will be rewarded. They will see (Stargate Universe) as being very much part of the Stargate universe. But we would like the mainstream audience as well."

"Make no mistake," he said. "Battlestar (Galactica) was a quality, quality show. And, yes, we want to make a quality show, too."

The show will make its UK premiere on 6th October, only a few days after its premiere in the US - 2nd October

Not A Lotta Bottle

An antiques collector who took a glass bottle he'd spent £1000 on to the Antiques Roadshow was shocked to discover it was only an olive oil bottle from Tesco.

The BBC have decided not to add to the man's embarrassment by leaving it out of the show which is due to air next month.

The unlucky collector was told by one of the shows experts, "I'm afraid it's an empty olive oil bottle, Tesco, circa 2008. It's worth nothing at all."

Presenter Fiona Bruce said, "Now I suppose we could have broadcast it - but it was just too cruel. The guy was devastated. There's a tiny bit of my brain that realises it would have made great television. But it's just not what the show is about. Poor chap, poor chap. The thing about the Antiques Roadshow is not to humiliate people."

A BBC spokeswoman added, "The specialist felt uncomfortable about filming the detailed conversation as the owner was clearly anxious about his recent purchase and felt to do so on camera would have caused embarrassment and upset."

Six extra Litte Miss & Mr Men characters will appear in the second series of the hit TV show which starts in September.

Mr Tall, Mr Funny and Little Miss Giggles, Magic, Bossy and Curious are being added to the cartoon on Five.

A source said, "The show has quickly become a firm favourite with young viewers - this time they should particularly look out for Little Miss Giggles who can't stop laughing and Little Miss Magic whose tricks always misfire.

Meanwhile Mr Funny is a silent clown who, in a similar vein to Harpo Marx, only communicates via a horn."

US To Remake Skins

MTV has said it plans to create it's own version of Channel 4's teen comedy drama, Skins. The third season of the show is currently being aired on Channel 4 after previously being shown on E4. A fourth series is due to show on E4 in 2010.

"Skins is one of those rare shows that cuts through to its core audience with unusually authentic stories due to the unique writing and casting process that Bryan pioneered," said MTV's Liz Gateley.

"Having personally pursued the UK project for almost two years, I am beyond thrilled to bring it to MTV in the US. We intend to preserve the authenticity of the British version and are excited to collaborate with the original team to develop stories that will speak to American youth."

End Of Ashes

Marshall Lancaster has told The Sun that he is glad that Life On Mars spin-off Ashes To Ashes will end after it's third series.

"These sorts of shows have only so much mileage and it will have gone as far as it can," he said. "I think we can stretch only one more series out of it.

"Everything should draw to an end at some point and sometimes you can flog these things to death. You've got to aim for something like Fawlty Towers where they didn't film many episodes but they were all brilliant."

About the third series he said, "It will be a real eye-opener and won't be what everybody expects."

Shooting Stars Returns

Cult quiz show Shooting Stars returns to BBC2 on Wednesday (26/08/09) at 10pm with guests Christine Bleakley, Paddy McGuinness, DJ Ironik and Angelos Epithemiou. The madcap returns after a successful Christmas special. Vic Reeves told Radio Times magazine: "There's more energy in this than anything we've done. We're not crippled and incapable yet. I think comedy probably is a young man's game, but it's gone a bit stale at the moment."

Bob Mortimer added: "It doesn't feel like there's been that much new. I think The Mighty Boosh are quite good. But I could have been watching this new crop - Michael McIntyre and people - 20 years ago."

Vic added: "When we were doing Vic Reeves Big Night Out, they were the kind of people that were around, and we came along and did something different. And they're still there. There's nothing new."
