An antiques collector who took a glass bottle he'd spent £1000 on to the Antiques Roadshow was shocked to discover it was only an olive oil bottle from Tesco.
The BBC have decided not to add to the man's embarrassment by leaving it out of the show which is due to air next month.
The unlucky collector was told by one of the shows experts, "I'm afraid it's an empty olive oil bottle, Tesco, circa 2008. It's worth nothing at all."
Presenter Fiona Bruce said, "Now I suppose we could have broadcast it - but it was just too cruel. The guy was devastated. There's a tiny bit of my brain that realises it would have made great television. But it's just not what the show is about. Poor chap, poor chap. The thing about the Antiques Roadshow is not to humiliate people."
A BBC spokeswoman added, "The specialist felt uncomfortable about filming the detailed conversation as the owner was clearly anxious about his recent purchase and felt to do so on camera would have caused embarrassment and upset."
